Chapter 21: SWANLOGA

“Your father is plotting against me,” Ragnar said as he surged through the door, not even knocking to announce his presence. Swanloga was both surprised and happy to see him. Although, she frowned as his words registered with her.

“Surely not, my father might not like you, but he would never conspire against you.”

“You think too kindly of Esbern. I’ve heard from two of my most trusted earls in Gothland and they both claim Esbern has been trying to bribe them to lose faith in me. Where is your father, by the way?”

“He is travelling right now.” Swanloga stopped short. She sucked her breath in before replying. “He’s visiting in Gothland.”

“I know. That is what Thorkill said in his latest message to me. It seems Ubbe is tied up in this too.”

Swanloga sat down, her legs suddenly feeling like they couldn’t support her weight. She had only been talking to Ubbe recently about his concerns at not having any land from his father. At the time, she suspected the words were simply being repeated back from the mouth of her father. However, she hadn’t said as much to her son as it would have caused more conflict. Ubbe was blind when it came to his grandfather. He followed him around eagerly, like a puppy who knew no better.

“Ubbe wants to know why you haven’t given him any land yet.” The words rushed out as dread settled in her stomach. It spread like poison, a sickness curling down into her core.

“I haven’t given him any land yet, because he hasn’t proven himself in battle. You know that’s when my boys receive their entitlements. How can I give him anything just because he is my son, especially since I haven’t done so for the others?”

“I understand. I just wish Ubbe did.” She had heard him talk of his children so often over the years that this knowledge was well known to her. Ubbe didn’t like to speak of his father and shushed her when she brought it up so, of course, Ubbe wouldn’t know this was how it happened. She regretted not mentioning it to him when they spoke about it.

“Yes, perhaps if you had come away with me at the start and became my wife, none of this would be happening now. Ubbe would have been raised to know this sort of thing. Instead, your father has infected him with complete nonsense.” Swanloga gasped. Over the years, she had suspected Ragnar thought this way but there had never been an opportunity to bring it up. To hear him say the words aloud were like daggers through her heart. She didn’t even know what to say in response. However, Ragnar filled the void.

“Where is Ubbe now?”

“He is in Gothland with my father.”
